Practices of Exemplary Leadership
“Model the Way” and “Encourage the Heart”
“Model the Way”
The idea of "modeling the way" makes me think of leading others by setting example. This is so important because many times when one is in a leadership position, they strive to lead by example. My definition of leadership is the ability to direct myself and influence those around me. Leadership involves establishing a clear vision and sharing that vision with others. From experience in high school, when I required all my mentees to do at least 5 hours of community service a month, I did the same and aided them in finding community service. I shared the goal with them which increased their respect for me.
“Encourage the Heart"
When I think about the characteristics of an exemplary leader, I think of someone who cares about the people they are leading. A person who isn’t just doing a job, activity, etc. to get to the finish line. Encouraging the heart can be reaffirming the members on your team. A team is stronger when everyone feels motivated and as if they belong. Leaders can encourage the heart by recognizing individuals for their contribution to the group by celebrating them.
